The Vietnamese outbound market
In 2025 Vietnamese residents made about 6.7 million trips abroad, a quarter more than the year before. This section sets out what the official numbers say, which destinations the reported data puts in front, and when in the year Vietnamese travellers actually go.
What the official numbers say
Vietnam's National Statistics Office reported about 6.7 million trips abroad by Vietnamese residents in 2025, up 26.4% on 2024, with 1.3 million of them in the fourth quarter. Earlier in the year the same office had reported nearly 4.1 million outbound trips in the first six months, up 53.9% on the first half of 2024.
Those two figures together say something about timing. The first half of the year contains the lunar new year and the long break around 30 April and 1 May, and it carried well over half of the year's trips. The market data page sets the numbers out in a table and explains how to read them against figures from destination countries.

Where the trips go
Vietnam does not publish an official breakdown of outbound trips by destination. What exists comes from the other end: arrivals counted by Japan, Korea, Thailand and Taiwan, each for its own period. In 2025 VOV, the national broadcaster, named Thailand, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan as leading destinations, and a Tet survey by a research firm listed China, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Thailand as the favourite international destinations for the holiday.
The reasons given are practical: visa access, short flights, many direct services, familiar food and, for Korea, the pull of its music and television. The destinations page has the figures and what they suggest for a destination further away.

When Vietnamese travellers go
The calendar is set by a few long breaks. The lunar new year, Tet, is the largest; for 2027 the Ministry of Home Affairs has fixed a seven-day break for public employees, from 4 to 10 February. National Day in September gives a shorter break, four days for public employees in 2027. Between them sit the 30 April and 1 May holidays, a five-day break in 2025, and the summer.
Two details matter for anyone selling trips. Private employers choose how to place the Tet days, within three permitted options, and must tell staff at least 30 days in advance. And a 2025 survey found that international trips tend to be planned for after Tet rather than during it, with demand rising in March. The holiday calendar page goes through the year.

What the data cannot tell you
- How many different people travelled. The statistics count trips, and frequent travellers are counted each time.
- The full-year split by destination, from Vietnamese sources. Destination countries publish their own arrivals, on their own definitions and calendars.
- Spending by destination. Survey figures on spending exist, but they come from small commercial samples and one holiday at a time.
- Who books through an agency and who books alone. Reports point both ways: package tours remain common, while some destinations report a shift to self-guided travel.
Treat every figure in this section as a dated reading, not a forecast. When a newer official figure appears, the page will be updated and the change recorded.
