Where Vietnamese travellers go, and why
Vietnam does not publish outbound trips by destination, so the picture has to be assembled from the arrivals that destination countries count. In 2025 those figures, and a Tet survey, put Thailand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and China in front. This page shows what was reported, for which period, and what drives the choice.
What destination countries reported for 2025
| Destination | Vietnamese arrivals | Period | Change | Counted by |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thailand | over 370,000 | January–June 2025 | −26% | Thai data, reported by VOV |
| Japan | 311,000 | January–May 2025 | +10% | Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) |
| Republic of Korea | more than 269,000 | January–June 2025 | +10% | Korean data, reported by VOV |
| Taiwan (China) | 114,000 | January–April 2025 | up from 113,000 | Taiwanese data, reported by VOV |
The periods differ, so the rows cannot be compared or added. They are the figures VOV, the national broadcaster, gathered in July 2025 from domestic and international organisations. VOV added that Vietnam ranked 10th among Japan's source markets, and that official data on Vietnamese travel to China and parts of Europe was not yet available.

The favourites at Tet
A survey of plans for the 2025 lunar new year by The Outbox Company, a research firm, asked about destinations rather than counting arrivals. The five most popular international destinations for the holiday were China, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Thailand. Survey and counts agree on the shape: short-haul Asia first, with North-East Asia strongly represented.

Thailand: the default choice, and a warning
VOV described Thailand as long the first destination chosen by Vietnamese travellers, and gave the reasons: an easy visa process, short travel time, plenty of flights, similar food and affordability. Yet the same report showed Vietnamese arrivals in Thailand down 26% in the first half of 2025, which it attributed to natural disasters and protests.
The lesson for any destination is that convenience creates demand but does not protect it. Vietnamese travellers and the agencies that sell to them react quickly to news about safety and disruption. A destination with a crisis-communication plan in Vietnamese, ready to brief Vietnamese tour operators and travel editors, is better placed than one that relies on its reputation.

Japan and Korea: growth despite a visa
Korea requires Vietnamese travellers to hold a visa, as VOV noted, and Japan is not named in Tuoi Tre's summary of the Henley lists (the e-visa group there is only a selection; check with Japan's consular authority). Both still grew Vietnamese arrivals by about a tenth in the periods reported. For Korea, VOV listed frequent direct flights, food, K-pop and Korean drama as the reasons, despite higher costs. For Japan, it noted a move from package tours towards customised and self-guided trips and interest in places beyond Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto.
Two things stand out. Cultural familiarity, built over years through music, film and food, can outweigh a visa requirement. And once a destination is familiar, the next growth comes from second and third visits to less known regions, which is where regional tourism boards and individual attractions can compete for attention.

Taiwan: steady, with visa-friendly policies
Taiwan recorded 114,000 Vietnamese tourists in the first four months of 2025, slightly more than the 113,000 of the same period a year earlier. VOV said Taiwan continued to pursue the Vietnamese market with visa-friendly policies and active promotion. Flat numbers in a fast-growing outbound market suggest that policy alone does not lift demand without products and promotion that Vietnamese travellers notice.

Further away: what is missing
There is little published data on Vietnamese arrivals in Europe, North America or Oceania in the sources we checked, and VOV noted the absence of official 2025 data for parts of Europe.
For a long-haul destination, this has two consequences. Your own arrival statistics are likely to be the best evidence of the Vietnamese market, so publish them by month. And the trade route matters more: long trips with a visa and a long flight are where a tour operator's help is most useful; the Tet survey found 44% of outbound travellers preferring all-inclusive tours.

What the destinations in front have in common
- A simple entry route. Visa-free entry, or a visa process that Vietnamese tour operators know how to handle. See the visa page.
- Direct flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Frequent direct services are cited for Korea and Thailand alike.
- Familiar culture. Food, music and television that Vietnamese audiences already know.
- Presence in the Vietnamese trade. Tourism boards from North-East and South-East Asia exhibit at the Vietnamese fairs; see the fairs page.
- Content in Vietnamese. Platforms where Vietnamese travellers plan trips are covered on the social platforms page.

Publishing your own Vietnamese arrival figures
The gap in the data is also an opportunity. A tourism board that publishes Vietnamese arrivals by month, with a clear definition and a release date, becomes the source that Vietnamese journalists, tour operators and researchers quote. JNTO's figures reached the Vietnamese public through VOV's reporting in exactly this way. Publish the series in English and Vietnamese, keep earlier months available, and say whether you count by nationality or residence. When your numbers rise, the release itself is a story for Vietnamese travel desks; when they fall, explaining why is better than silence.

Where the figures stop
We could not read full-year 2025 arrival figures from Japan, Korea, Thailand or Taiwan for this edition. When they are confirmed from the destinations' own statistics, this page will replace the partial-year figures and say so in the corrections log on the about page.
Common questions
Questions readers ask
Which country do Vietnamese travellers visit most?
Reports for 2025 put Thailand, Japan, Korea and Taiwan in front, but the available figures cover different periods, so no single order can be confirmed from them.
Does needing a visa stop Vietnamese travellers?
Not on its own. Korea requires a visa from Vietnamese travellers and still reported growth in Vietnamese arrivals in 2025, as did Japan.
Is there data on Vietnamese travel to Europe?
VOV reported in July 2025 that official data for parts of Europe was not yet available. Destination countries' own statistics are the best source.
